Drive 911

Coming from rather humble beginnings, the Porsche 911 has become one of the most recognizable vehicles in the world. Today’s 911 delivers stunning levels of performance without sacrificing much daily drivability.
    The latest generation 911 is larger and boasts an updated suspension, electric power steering, the world’s first seven-speed manual transmission and a more powerful and efficient engine.
    The 911 Carrera is available in either coupe or convertible (Cabriolet) body styles, and features a 350-horsepower 3.4-liter flat-6 engine, while the Carrera S has a 400-hp 3.8-liter flat-6. Both have the seven-speed manual transmission or the optional dual-clutch seven-speed automated manual called the PDK. Rear-wheel drive is standard, but all-wheel drive is optional.
    Even more exciting, the all-wheel-drive Turbo has a twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-6 with a mind blowing 500 hp while the Turbo S has an extra 23 hp. Step up to the rear-drive, sport-tuned GT3 and you’ll get a 435-hp naturally aspirated 3.8-liter flat-6 under the hood. The GT3 RS is a track-ready version of the same car but with 450 hp. There’s also a GT3 RS 4.0 version with a 4.0-liter flat-6 that make 500 hp. Just when you thought Porsche couldn’t squeeze any more performance out of the 911, they created a GT2 RS with a version of the Turbo S engine pumped up to a shocking 620 hp. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on all and PDK is optional on all but the GT3 and GT2 trims.
    When it comes to handling, the 911 is amazingly comfortable tearing through a twisty Indiana road or smoothly dealing with the daily commute on a straight-line highway. The PDK dual-clutch automated manual gearbox rewards drivers with the best of both transmission worlds. The 911 models with amped up performance are less commuter-friendly, but they serve up performance and handling that competes with exotic supercars.
    Most buyers will find that the base 911 Carrera should be more than enough since it launches from 0 to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds with a top speed close to 180 mph. Handling is incredible, so much so that the new 911 isn’t far off from the capabilities of the GT models.
